Tuesday “News:” 90s-Related Media I Discovered Last Week

Well, let’s see; what 90s stuff did I do last week?

1. Seinfeld Tracker

I watched: “The Nap,” “The Yada Yada,” “The Millennium,” “The Muffin Tops,” and “The Summer of George,” bringing me to the end of season 8. “The Millennium” and “The Muffin Tops” were hilarious, with Kramer mumbling nonsense about the year 2000 and Elaine trying to open a bakery that sells only muffin tops.

As with “The Soup Nazi,” I thought “The Yada Yada” was more iconic than it was funny, but it did have its moments.

My cousin, David, reminisced:”

“I still remember the bus ride to school the day after this episode aired originally. Every kid in school was saying yada yada everything. Even to teachers. Seinfeld was a cultural phenomenon.”

I decided I’m going to savor season 9. Only 24 episodes left!

2. Simpsons Tracker

Last week I saw three Simpsons episodes: “The Call of the Simpsons,” “The Telltale Head,” and “Life on the Fast Lane.” The personalities of the family are becoming more familiar to me now, but I’m still getting introduced to some of the supporting characters and places (Krusty the Klown, Kwik E-mart, Moe’s, etc).

"Now this is living, eh kids? Hot Pizza-the food of kings!"

“Now this is living, eh kids? Hot Pizza-the food of kings!”

My favorite episode of the three had to be “The Telltale Head,” (good summary here) where Bart saws off the head of a statue of the town’s founder, Jebediah Springfield, in order to fit in with some cool kids from school. However, Bart’s actions end up backfiring on him, and all the town’s inhabitants form an angry mob and surround Bart near the statue. The whole episode is his speech to placate their anger, which he succeeds in doing.

3. Portlandia and Hip Hop History

My friend Katie sent me a clip from a Portlandia episode where Carrie Brownstein teaches Fred Armisen about the history of hip hop. I am very much Fred in this situation, and I wish I had a copy of Carrie’s flow chart.

4. Seattle Post

Last week I posted my first article of six about my trip to Seattle for the 20th anniversary of Kurt Cobain’s death. It was by far my most viewed and shared post to this point, and I had some encouraging interactions about it as well. This week is pretty busy for me, but I hope to have part two up sometime next week.
